A new year means new trends, even in the food world! In the 2017 world of fashion you’ll see large handbags and trench coats on the runways. On your dinner plates, you’ll be relishing in foods rich in nutrients such as avocados and wholesome chia seeds. According to the “What’s Trending in Nutrition” survey from Pollock Communications and Today’s Dietitian magazine, which predicted these will be the top 10 superfoods of the year:

  • Seeds (chia and hemp)
  • Avocado
  • Nuts (almonds and walnuts)
  • Fermented foods (yogurt)
  • Ancient grains
  • Kale
  • Green tea
  • Coconut products
  • Exotic fruits
  • Salmon

We are moving away from dieting (finally) as a way to lose weight and we are moving into The Superfood Trendsof clean and mindful eating as a way to achieve health; losing weight is a great side perk of this approach. Clean eating includes a focus on whole, real food without chemicals, dyes and pesticides. Nutrient dense foods are also at the heart of clean eating — foods like seeds, avocados, greens and nuts—along with those that have health-promoting qualities, like fermented foods, healthy oils and green tea. Mindful eating is defined as slowing down and being aware of the food you’re eating in that moment. It means putting down your phone, turning off the TV, chewing and tasting your food, and therefore enjoying what’s on the plate. The “What’s Trending in Nutrition” survey found that 59 percent of consumers plan to eat clean by choosing fewer processed foods and consuming more whole foods—including veggies, fruits, ancient grains, nuts and seeds.

Whatever the year brings, remember that food trends may come and go, but great nutrition is for life! In 2017, make a point to load up on all sorts of whole, organic, local, real foods—not just the trending ones—and implement changes that feel great to you.
