Women Working with Women:  From Sabotage to Support

The workplace and the world sorely need women working in full partnership with men.  This will happen only when women break through the glass ceiling, and that will happen only if women fully support other women.  At Camp Experience, we see the best of what women offer each other—closeness, support and celebration.  In the workplace, women sometimes experience something very different, the “dark side” of women working with women—lack of support, cattiness and even sabotage.  What underlies the dark side?  How can we change it?

Caroline Turner, an expert on gender differences, will lead us through the research on women working with women.  We’ll explore the important differences in masculine and feminine perspectives and approaches and how they give rise to the dark side.  With this understanding, we will find and commit to ways to support women fully.

Caroline Turner

A dynamic and engaging workshop facilitator, speaker and executive coach, Caroline Turner is a principal in The AthenA Group LLC, a consulting firm that specializes in organizational culture change, multidimensional leadership and workforce excellence.  Caroline is the former senior vice president, general counsel of Coors Brewing Company.  Caroline is a member of the Board of Directors of the Women’s Vision Foundation and Warren Village, the advisory board of The Mentoring Company and the honorary board of the Colorado Women’s Hall of Fame.  She has served on the board of the Women’s Forum of Colorado and has participated actively in the Women’s Initiative at Mile High United Way and in several capacities at the University of Denver College of Law. She is a former trustee and chair of the Board of Warren Village.  She also represented Coors as a member of the Board of Greater Denver Metro Chamber of Commerce and the advisory boards of the National Hispana Leadership Institute and the National Council of La Raza.    Caroline as been a annual speaker at CampExperience.

Life is short:  Live it!

Henry David Thoreau said most of us ” lead lives of quiet desperation”  and go to the grave with our song still  in us.

Ancient Egyptians  believed that upon death they would be asked two questions – and their answers would determine their journey in the afterlife.  The first – did you bring joy?  The second—did you find joy?   Let’s explore finding our  song, our joy and  living a life of meaning.

Mary Lou Makepeace joined the Gay & Lesbian Fund for Colorado as executive director in December 2003. In this role, she oversees the fund's programs, builds alliances with Colorado communities and other nonprofits, and directs the fund's staff and policy. Prior to joining the Gay & Lesbian Fund, Mary Lou was the executive director for Leadership Pikes Peak, where she managed an array of community leadership programs designed to develop leadership skills and promote civic involvement. She was the first female mayor of Colorado Springs, serving from 1997 to 2003. As mayor, she led a nine-member city council, served as chairman of the board of Colorado Springs Utilities and provided oversight to city-owned Memorial Hospital. In addition, she is an adjunct faculty member for the Center for Creative Leadership and the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs, as well as running the Mary Lou Makepeace Group.

Her experience also includes being a teacher at the American School in Tananarive, Madagascar; assistant to the Defense Attaché at the American Embassy in Prague, Czechoslovakia following the Soviet invasion; and the adult education officer at Ramstein Air Force Base in Germany. Mary Lou has served on a variety of state, local and national committees, including the Colorado Space Advisory Committee, the Policy Advisory Council of the American Public Power Association, the Energy Committee of the U.S. Conference of Mayors, and the Leadership Training Council of the National League of Cities. Mary Lou attended the Program for Senior Executives in State and Local Government at Harvard University, and holds a Masters of Public Affairs from the University of Colorado and a Bachelors degree in journalism from the University of North Dakota.

Bioidentical Hormone Therapy:  Separating the Facts from the Hype

Have you been hearing about bio-identical hormones and wondering if they are everything they are touted to be? If you’ve watched Oprah or read Suzanne Sommers, you may be wondering if bio-identical hormones are the answer, not only for menopause, but for depression, anxiety, fatigue, sexual dysfunction and weight gain.  Dr Dianne Stone, a practicing gynecologist, hormone specialist and veteran CampExperience™ speaker, will help you separate the hype from the facts. During this workshop you’ll learn how and when to test for hormones and the risks and benefits of bio-identical hormone therapy. You’ll leave the workshop with information and resources that you can take to your health practitioner. (And if your practitioner doesn’t “believe” in hormone therapy, she’ll help guide you to responsible practitioners that do.)

Dr. Dianne Stone, MD

In her mid-40’s, after marrying and becoming the stepmother of three teenagers, Dianne decided to leave the thriving OB-Gyn practice she had founded in 1991. After 15 years of the joyful but hectic and stressful life of delivering babies, she began to feel the longing for the intimacy and simplicity of a solo gynecologic practice dedicated to her passion—the care of the midlife woman.

Dianne was born and raised in Denver, graduating from C.U. in 1979. She completed medical school and did her residency training in OB-Gyn here in Denver.  She started her own OB-Gyn practice in 1991 which flourished and eventually grew to a busy four-physician practice.  After marrying in 2000 and becoming the stepmother of three teenagers, Dianne began to long for the intimacy of solo practice. In 2001 she opened her new solo gynecologic practice, Dianne C. Stone, MD PC.

Dianne’s practice focuses on her passion—mid-life health and wellness. She has received additional training in menopause, osteoporosis, female sexuality, cholesterol management and incontinence and is a certified menopause practitioner thru the North American Menopause Society.  She has studied with a medical herbalist to help her patients who desire an alternative approach. She specializes in holistic care of the midlife transition.

Emotional Intelligence:  It’s Not How Smart You Are, its How You Are Smart.”***

The field of Emotional Intelligence research is growing and is having a tremendous impact on the success of individuals and organizations.  Also known as EQ, Emotional Intelligence is defined by qualities or characteristics that include compassion, creativity, trust, intentionality and resilience.  Developing Emotional Intelligence increases one’s success on both personal and professional levels.

Workshop participants are provided with a self-assessment tool, the EQ Map which is completed during the first part of the session.  After completing the questions in the tool, each participant will map her individual EQ qualities on the EQ map.  Each scale in the EQ Map will be addressed in detail and participants will be presented with numerous exercises to help them develop further insight into their own Emotional Intelligence.  Using the map as a guide for personal development, participants will identify areas of strength and vulnerability.  The workshop will also provide participants with a process to manage behavioral change and personal growth.  Developing Emotional Intelligence will enhance success for individual midwives as well as for midwifery practices.

Women who have attended the Emotional Intelligence Workshop in the past have described it as “…a wonderful opportunity for personal insight and growth.” and, …”a transforming experience that left me feeling renewed and more positive about life.”

***This workshop includes an EQ Map for each participant.

Barbara Hughes is the Director of the Nurse-Midwifery Practice and the Women’s Service Line at St. Anthony Central Hospital.  With a unique combination of a Master degrees in Nursing and Business, Barbara has developed a national reputation for developing and growing practices and women’s programs.  Barbara is very involved in community activities and boards including the Colorado Perinatal Care Council, the American College of Nurse-Midwives Foundation Board of Trustees, The Newborn Channel Advisory Board and will join the Board of the St. Anthony Health Foundation this fall.  She was recently selected by Colorado Governor Ritter to serve on the Collaborative Scopes of Care Advisory Committee.   She speaks extensively on the local and national level on a variety of clinical topics as well as leadership and personal development.  Barbara is certified in Emotional Intelligence and integrates this fascinating topic into her approach to women’s health.

Traveling at Lightspeed!  How to tap Your Extraordinary Inner Resources

Connect with your intuitive brilliance, that part of you that already knows the answers before you've asked the questions.  Within each of us, lives an inner knowing beyond our logical mind. We occasionally catch random flashes of it, yet it's only recently that we've learned how to harness its power intentionally. In the space between our thoughts, we can access this intuitive power.  In a flash, we can receive specific guidance,  heal pain, and create a blueprint for a successful future.  This new paradigm is grounded in the latest neuroscience research that shows our neurological system is plastic... it can regenerate and be molded in desirable ways.  In this session, you'll dip into the space between your thoughts and access your great self.  You are more than you think!

Dr. Deb Sandella has been helping others find themselves for over 25 years as a psychotherapist.  It wasn't until she journeyed half way around the world on a personal sabbatical to Australia that she realized she had become more aware of her client's feelings than her own. Her life-changing Walkabout spawned a personal transformation that inspired her to close her practice and write her award-winning book and guided-intuitive meditation CD.  She has been called a "master healer" by well-known author, Joan Borysenko Ph.D., and visionary physician Larry Dossey writes, "Dr. Sandella offers a practical, down-to-earth method of realizing the immense potential that lives within everyone." Currently, she has partnered with Jack Canfield, Chicken Soup co-author, to create a state-of-the-art visualization tool that helps you attract health, wealth, and happiness. Journeying to study with the aborigines of Australia and the native tribes of Peru, her professional skills have been enlivened with intimate experiences of the dreamtime.  Dr. Deb speaks internationally, offers private and group transformational sessions, and has created the RIM Method an innovative, advanced technique for Re-patterning Images in the subconscious Mind.

Finding Calm Amidst the Chaos: Creating a Sustainable Life

Dr. Deborah Kern is a health scientist who dares people to live in harmony with the wisdom of their bodies. This conviction was inspired by her pioneering research showing that mind/body integrated approaches to exercise are more effective at reducing anxiety than conventional approaches to exercise.

This discovery stimulated Dr. Kern to go deeper. Her search has included studying and practicing:

Herbal medicine while living with indigenous women in the rainforest of Costa Rica

  • Yogic lifestyle while living on an ashram
  • Nia  -- a cardiovascular exercise that blends movements from the martial arts, dance, body integration therapies and yoga
  • Ayurveda – the ancient healing system from India
  • Phoenix Rising Yoga Therapy – a body mind therapy
  • Exotic Dance for Everyday Women

An internationally acclaimed speaker, Dr. Kern is also the author of “Everyday Wellness for Women” and co-author of “Create the Body Your Soul Desires: The Friendship Solution to Weight, Energy and Sexuality"  Her years of practice as a nurse, health educator, personal trainer, yoga and Nia teacher and yoga therapist have given her lifestyle insights not found in books. She has become very aware that when people live their lives disconnected from their bodies’ messages, they not only miss out on the wisdom of their bodies and opportunities to heal emotional issues, but they are also more likely to experience stress and dis-ease instead of pleasure and joy. When they pay attention to body wisdom and continue to seek pleasure,  "miraculous" changes can occur.

As a health scientist, speaker, author, mother and wife, Dr. Kern is passionate about creating health, balance, serenity and joy in her own life while assisting individuals and organizations to do the same in theirs.  Dr. Kern studied Nursing at Vanderbilt University and received a B.A. and an M.B.A. from the University of Texas at Austin. She received a Ph.D. in Health Sciences from Texas Woman’s University in Denton, TX. She is a Black Belt Nia Teacher, certified Integral Hatha Yoga Instructor, Phoenix Rising Yoga Therapist and Mindful Change Coach.
